Monday Morning Recap for Sunday - February 26, 2012

I so enjoy the privilege of leading worship with some of the finest musicians in town - and my choir is no exception. Choir Sundays are and always have been some of my favorite Sundays. It's never too late to join the choir.

We opened yesterday with Paul Baloche's Hosanna.

After our call to worship we sang Because of Your Love, Come Ye Sinners, Praise to the Lord the Almighty, Never Let Go, and Before the Throne of God Above.

Our offering song was Tommy Walker's When I Don't Know What to Do.

If you've been thinking about joining the choir - it's still not too late to join us for our Palm Sunday worship service. We rehearse every Wednesday night from 6-7 in the choir room. Drinks, snacks and childcare are provided.

Here's a recording of our offering song yesterday.

Thursday Thoughts

1. I like the architecture on the new building that's going up in the Meadowbrook Office Park.

2. Isn't the beep on a voicemail greeting universally recognized as "talk now?" Can we get rid of the nice lady that gives up 2 minutes of instructions?

3. I think Facebook and twitter are probably doing the opposite of what we think they're doing.

4. I like the line in Natalie Grant's Your Great Name that says "the enemy, he has to leave, at the sound of Your great name."

5. Bruster's is closed for the winter - but almost everyday i've been able to run outside in shorts.

Thoughts on Lent from two years ago

I thought about writing about Lent again - and then I found what I wrote two years ago - and I still echo every word...

I grew up Catholic . . . left that church when I was 16 and started attending the Southern Baptist church across town. I had conscientious objections to what they [the church] was teaching regarding the sacrament of the lord's supper, and confession, and found those teachings contrary to what I read and believe that Scripture teaches.

Having said that - i would, almost every year, participate in the season of Lent by "giving up something" for the 40 day-season.

Lent - started in the early church (3rd or 4th century) was a common practice up to the protestant reformation. It's now still a common practice in the Roman Catholic church - and there are a few protestant denominations that practice.

I quit "giving something up" for lent when I switched churches at 16, but last year, felt compelled to fast from something for the season - and it wasn't out of guilt, or obligation, but more out of a sense of seeking God during those 40 days, and setting out to intentionally abstain from something that I would normally partake in. My prayer - that through 'wanting' that which i normally get, i'd have a greater sense of my need for repentance, and a greater heart of thanksgiving for God's grace in my life.

So my encouragement:

maybe you're desperately seeking God to show up - in your marriage, your kids, your job, your health. maybe you've strayed so far that you've forgotten that the God of the universe pursues you. My encouragement would be to "give something up" for this brief season - not because Jesus will love you any more than He already does . . . but perhaps as you desire the earthly things, your prayer can be that He'd set your mind on things above . . . Spend a season of a bit of sacrifice with the prayer that God would specifically show up in where you're longing to see Him work . . .

Good morning interwebs.

I was out yesterday - leading worship for one of our men's retreats.

Patrick Bush and the youth worship team lead worship at Oak Mountain. Patrick always does a great job. Let me encourage you that may be reading this, if you have kids that are jr and sr high age - please get them involved in the youth ministry at oak mountain.

They opened yesterday with Happy Day.

After the call to worship they sang Awesome is the Lord Most High, No Not One, Come Thou Fount, and Enough.

For the offering song, they sang We Will Run - a newer tune by Gungor.

Choir sings this week. I LOVE choir sundays.

Monday Morning Recap for Sunday - February 12, 2012

Celebrated the Lord's supper yesterday - as we do on every 2nd sunday of the month. Also installed a new sound system in our youth house - love it. If you go to Oak Mountain - be sure and swing by there and take a listen...

We opened yesterday with Song of the Redeemed. Sure, it's a little fast - but I think it's a catchy tune.

After our call to worship we sang Hillsong's Hosanna, Break Through, How Firm a Foundation, and Stronger. Our offering song was I Lift My Hands.

For communion we sang I Lay it Down, and Surrender.
