Monday Morning Recap for Sunday - January 23, 2011

Choir led in worship yesterday. I love choir Sundays - great opportunity to get as many people involved in leading worship as possible. if you haven't joined the choir - think about it. We meet every Wednesday night (except for this Wednesday) and have childcare, and snacks in case you're hungry ...

We opened yesterday with a song I wrote with Billy Ivey called I Will Sing.

After our call to worship we sang Amazing God, Blessed Be Your Name, Jesus Paid it All, and Mighty to Save.

Our offering song was Gloria, by Matt Redman. Funny story, he wrote the version we sang yesterday, with the two verses as sung. He had a ton of requests from people to write a Christmas verse - and he turned them all down and wrote one on his own, which was the version we sang for our Christmas Spectacular.

Our Global Missions Conference starts this Sunday. Come join us - Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday nights.

Happy 4th birthday to #3

#3 came along in 2007. He was, what most would describe as "unexpected." His older brother is a mere 16 months older. He's an incredible gift, and we think, quite possibly, crazier than #1 and #2 put together.

Some of the best money we spend each month

We've got our #1 and #2 in Tae Kwon Do. Apparently there's varying degrees and disciplines, even in the outfits here in Birmingham. I've been convinced since day 1 that we made the right decision with World Class TKD.

This is the recent testing that their two instructors, Richard Coon and Justin Scarcella went through to earn their 4th degree black belt. Absolutely incredible.

Trash TV

I'm just gonna say this. I hate trash TV. And let's face it - stuff that falls in this category (for me at least) are shows like:
The Bachelor/Bachelorette - conveniently, starting back up tonight, Survivor, Big Brother, American Idol, Top Model, anything on MTV, a lot of things on Fox, blah blah blah, etc. You get the point. Usually, if it's called "reality," then i automatically turn it off. Except for Pawn Stars. I LOVE watching pawn stars. Kind of a mix between antiques roadshow and american chopper.

Anyway - the bachelor is on, and I have to configure my knees just right so my MAC sits and blocks most of the TV... but here's what bugs me. This guy is going to send how many women home at the end of this night's party? 8? 10? And he gets to base that on... wait for it... LOOKS! Wowzer. The epitome of what we're dealing with in society and in the church. We're (as a church) striving so hard to let the Gospel shine through - for the Gospel to be the truth - which tells us that we are whole, loved, true, and pursued by the Father, because of Christ - because of His beauty... and because of that, we are made beautiful.

But on one of the most "popular" reality shows - scores of women are "sent home" because of a first impression. How does this end up translating to church? To the masks we wear? To the pretense we try to live out? We start, continue, or intensify the thinking that our mask is how we are evaluated, that our appearance is how we're defined. It ends up burying our truth, inflating our shame, and obscuring our view of true beauty.

The alternative - embracing Christ and the beauty that He gives to our lives.

I hate trash TV.

Monday Morning Recap for Sunday - January 2, 2011

2011. Wowzer. It goes by faster and faster every year.

We only had one service yesterday - and i love the packed house. It's great to see all the faces at once, and hear all the singing...

We opened with Come Ye Sinners - which is ending up being one of my favorite hymn re-writes.

After our call to worship we sang Because of Your Love, Our God Saves, O Worship the King, and How Deep the Father's Love for Us.

Our offering song was Tommy Walker's I Have a Hope.

We kick things back into half-gear this week. Worship choir resumes on Wednesday the 12th. Now is a great time to get plugged in, as we start preparing for our Palm Sunday worship.
